Bury continued their impressive form in the new League Two season after managing a 2-1 win over Accrington Stanley. This result means that the team has been unbeaten in the last four matches, while this run includes only two dropped points. This sees Bury only three points behind table leaders Burton Albion in what is turning out to be an intense fight for the top of the table in this year’s League Two season. Despite having played five matches, the top six teams are separated by just three points. Bury did not make a great start to the season after losing 1-0 against Cheltenham Town in the opening game of the season.
However, they have since recovered to put together an incredible run of form, but there was a danger of Accrington inflicting a defeat on the home team. The visitors took the lead in the 19th minute through Naismith. For long periods of the match, Bury were the dominating force and it was not pleasing to see them get ahead in front just after the hour mark. Danny Rose had equalised in the first half before Danny Mayor’s 62 minute goal that eventually turned out to be the winner.
The last 15 minutes were extremely nervous for the home team because of McNulty receiving his marching orders due to his second yellow card.
“We had to grind it out so I have to give Accrington credit. In the first half they gave us more problems than most teams. They passed it well and we weren’t at the races. We didn’t get to grips with their shape, so I was delighted to come in at the break 1-1 and not be a goal down. In the second half I saw a better performance from most of our players. With 11 men we took the game to them, forced them onto the back foot and created some decent chances,” said Flitcroft.
