Bury AFC fans have been given the challenge of raising£1m in the quest to buy their Gigg Lane ground. The Bury fans were given the challenge by a government-run community ownership fund who pledged to give them £1mtowards buying their Gigg Lane ground as long as they can raise the same figure.
Bury AFC went into administration in November last year some months after the club was expelled from the EFL (English Football League). Bury AFC were expelled from the EFL in August 2019.
On reviving Bury AFC, Michael Gove said they are helping to put power back into the hands of Bury fans. Michael Gove is the Secretary of State for Levelling Up. Speaking further, Gove said that the collapse of Bury AFC isa stain on English football. According to him, Bury AFC collapse is the result of the game being taken away from the communities and supporters who made it by corporate interest and big business.
Michael Gove then paid tribute to the Bury supporters for their resolve in bringing their club back to life.
The £1m figure is as a result of the application by the fan group known as Forever Bury and it’s from the government’s levelling up fund. With the help of the fund, Gigg Lane would be transformed into a multi-use community asset, including an all-weather pitch and gym for local schools and the public plus adult education facility. Also, the Manchester Road Stand will accommodate physiotherapy provision and NHS diagnostic.
Bury AFC owner Steve Daleput the club into administration in November 2020 on the back of their expulsion from the English Football League and in October, a consortium led by supporters group Est. 1885 entered into a period of exclusivity to buy both the 12,500-capacity and the club.
