It is often said that only teams with momentum in the business end of the season will be able to achieve promotion.
David Flitcroft has once again backed those ideas by stating that his team remained well placed in order to get promotion, but they should not let their heads drift. The club have been in impeccable form since the middle of February and they have won four matches on the bounce. Ahead of the upcoming home match against Oxford United, Flitcroft remains confident that his team can achieve five wins on the trot.
He has once again reminded fans that it is extremely difficult to achieve the kind of momentum that Bury have built up in the last few weeks. Once it has been established, it is difficult to maintain that run going. Oxford United may be struggling down near the bottom of the table, but this is a potential banana skin for the club. This was the kind of form shown by Bury at the start of the season, but they struggled during the middle part of the campaign. As a result, the prospects of even finishing in the play-offs looked to be in doubt. Now, Bury can even realistically in for an automatic promotion spot.
“You have to earn momentum it does not just happen overnight – but now we’ve built it and we certainly want to keep it going. We’re going to trust the players, you hope the stadium is going to trust the players and from the start of the season I’m going to look for people getting carried away.Players thinking we should have won every game and just rocking up in a League Two game thinking you can win it – it proved you can’t,” said Flitcroft, whose team has conceded only one goal in the last five games.
